I have a shirt I purchased a few months ago that says “Gun Rights are Women’s Rights.” When I first read this statement I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. After hearing the news that Walmart decided to stop selling ammo…including handgun calibers many rely on for self-defense I realize how true this statement is.

Sitting here in my middle-class neighborhood with my car in the driveway, accessing the internet I realize that my situation is not the situation of everyone across the country.

People like me may only find this decision to be a minor inconvenience. I personally will just buy from local gun shops or order online using my credit card. Easy, right? Why can’t everyone just do this?

Well simply, not everyone has a local gun shop or the ability to order online.

What has hit me really hard with Walmart’s Decision to stop selling any ammo not used for hunting alone is the fact that they are taking away this self-defense resource directly from women who may have had Walmart as the only place they could purchase ammo.¬†

We were talking at the local gun range and someone said: “I’ll just order ammo online now.” Which is great…if you have the resources to shop online however, many American Women do not…

Imagine you have taken the bus from your apartment, home, work or even a shelter to Walmart. As a woman chances are that you do the primary shopping for your household. Groceries, self-care items like shampoo and medicine¬†and before Walmart’s decision to limit the public’s access to handgun ammo…you could have stopped in the sporting good section to pick up 50 rounds of Winchester or Federal to use in the handgun you have to defend you and your family. A family whichI’m certain in many cases involves children.

“What if you don’t take the bus.” Even if you drive to the store and have access to a vehidle you may not have a mailbox or porch to receive packages on and rely on a P.O. Box. If you’ve ever shopped online you know that many places just don’t ship to P.O. Boxes.

This makes Walmart’s move to stop selling Ammo a direct move to seriously limit self-defense resources to women across the country.
